The approach from the north is dominated by the A217 climbing the North Downs escarpment as Reigate Hill, past Gatton Bottom and Wray Lane to M25 junction 8. National Highways is working on that junction, and Surrey County Council lists further approved minor schemes nearby, including enhanced pedestrian crossing at the A217 Woodhatch crossroads and improved crossing facilities at A25 West Street and Upper West Street and at A25 High Street and Park Lane. Any of those can change how a run into the town behaves on a given week.
Inside the town the network is compact. The A25 runs east to west as Church Street, the High Street and then West Street and Upper West Street towards Buckland and Dorking, while the A217 forms the north to south spine through Bell Street and Bancroft Road. Surrey County Council has proposed dropping five town-centre sections from 30mph to 20mph, covering Church Street, the High Street, the whole of Bancroft Road, Bell Street from Church Street to 109B, and the 60 metre access to Morrisons off Bell Street. Its assessment recorded 11 collisions on Bell Street over three years, the highest of the town-centre sections, so an operator working there should expect scrutiny rather than tolerance.
West of the town the A25 has been rebuilt for safety. The route between Dorking and Reigate was identified by the Road Safety Foundation as one of the worst A-road routes in the country for fatal and serious injuries per vehicle kilometre, and Surrey County Council’s Safe System scheme, funded with 1.8 million pounds from the Department for Transport across roughly 8.4 kilometres of Reigate Road, Buckland Road and West Street, introduced average speed cameras, high containment kerbs at the Reigate bends and near the River Mole bridge, and central hatching to deter overtaking. High containment kerbing at the Buckland bends was delivered in January 2024 and West Street improvements in November and December 2024.
There is very little industrial land to work from locally. Albert Road North Estate is the only industrial estate the borough council lists in Reigate itself, a compact estate close to the town centre with access to the M25, so most heavier commercial activity here is small-scale and town-centre based. Material for a Reigate job is generally coming in from outside the town, which is another reason to make each lorry movement do two things.
MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, ballast, sharp sand, building sand, topsoil and shingle, all loose by the load. A typical Reigate order pairs a sub-base with a drainage stone, because the ground here rarely takes water away neatly on its own.
The two sands cause the most confusion when someone is ordering from a drawing. Sharp sand is coarse and washed, and it belongs in concrete, screed and paving bedding. Building sand is fine and soft, and it belongs in mortar for brickwork and rendering. One will not do the other’s job, and the mistake usually shows up after the mixer has been running.

On greensand ground the drainage material matters as much as the sub-base, because springs and seepage are common where permeable layers sit over clay.
Sometimes, and that is exactly the problem. Reigate stands on the Wealden greensand ridge below the North Downs escarpment, and the borough council’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records the central band around Reigate, Redhill and Merstham as underlain by a variety of subsoils including Upper Greensand, Gault, Folkestone Beds, Sandgate Beds, Hythe Beds and Atherfield Clay.
Permeability varies considerably across that sequence, and springs break out where permeable layers overlie less permeable ones. Excavated material on one plot can range from clean sand at one end to sticky Gault clay at the other, so a heap that looks like usable granular fill in the morning can be unusable by the afternoon. Testing what you have before designing around it is cheaper than discovering it under a slab.
The safer approach on most RH2 jobs is to take the variable material off site and bring in graded stone that behaves predictably. MOT Type 1 or crushed concrete carries the load, shingle handles the water where springs and seepage are a factor, and the formation stops being a guess.
Pear Tree Farm, Featherbed Lane, Croydon CR0 9AA is about 10.7 miles from Reigate, roughly 34 minutes for a car down the A23 and then the A25 Reigate Road, with M25 junction 8 immediately above the town. A loaded eight-wheeler adds roughly 15 to 20 per cent to a car journey time, and the figure is typical rather than guaranteed.
Junction 8 at Reigate Hill is the known pinch point. National Highways has been adding a lane to the southbound A217, rebuilding and realigning the carriageway at Gatton Bottom, upgrading signal control and widening lanes, with utility diversions forming part of the works. The same scheme is recorded as delivering almost 53,000 hours of journey time savings in its first year, which tells you how much time was being lost there.
Reigate itself lies outside Greater London, so neither the ULEZ nor the Low Emission Zone applies on site. Any load that continues north into London does have to meet LEZ standards, which apply to lorries, vans and specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Because the duty of care follows the material, and because the local disposal options are narrow. Earlswood Community Recycling Centre on Horley Road, Earlswood, Redhill RH1 6PN is the nearest Surrey site to Reigate and it is a household facility. Business waste is not accepted, and Surrey County Council directs businesses to a waste transfer station instead.

Same-day collection is often possible but always subject to availability, and Reigate is about 34 minutes from the depot for a car before a loaded vehicle adds roughly 15 to 20 per cent. Both compact into a sound sub-base when laid in layers on a prepared formation, so the answer is usually whichever the specification allows. Type 1 is primary graded stone and is what most written specifications name. Crushed concrete is recycled graded material that does the same job wherever recycled granular fill is acceptable, which covers most domestic patios and paths.
