Croydon to Coulsdon is 4.2 miles and roughly 13 minutes in a car. Add about 15 to 20 per cent for a loaded eight-wheeler and call it fifteen or sixteen minutes, understanding that the figure is typical rather than guaranteed. What makes this route unusually reliable for a lorry is the road itself.
The A23 Farthing Way relief road, a 1.7km bypass of Coulsdon town centre opened in December 2006, was built with one southbound lane, two northbound lanes and a priority lane specifically for buses, heavy goods vehicles and cyclists. Transport for London put the traffic it removed from the town centre at about 80 per cent. For a grab lorry that means the approach to a CR5 site is rarely the problem, and the planning effort belongs at the site end instead.
Coulsdon sits on the southern edge of Greater London, so the ULEZ applies here while the M25, a few miles further south past Hooley, does not. That boundary catches out hauliers coming up from Surrey more often than it catches local sites, but it is worth confirming on any subcontracted delivery you are expecting.
The ground is the other local factor. Croydon’s Level 1 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records the bedrock in the south of the borough as Middle and Upper Chalk with Clay with flints along the southern boundary, so Coulsdon spoil is typically flinty clay over chalk rather than the London Clay found further north. The same assessment notes extensive aquifers in the southern chalk and mostly spring-fed watercourses, indicating groundwater at or very close to the surface in some places, which is the practical constraint on basement and deep foundation work around the town.

Muck away and grab hire dominate, and the volumes here can be substantial: building the relief road alone took around 150,000 cubic metres of excavation, and the housing schemes that followed have kept groundworkers busy. Flinty clay, chalk, concrete, rubble and hardcore come off CR5 sites and leave under our carrier registration with a transfer note, since no Croydon recycling centre will take trade waste. Deliveries of MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, ballast, sharp sand and topsoil run the other way on the same short leg.

Coulsdon sits on the southern edge of Greater London, where the ULEZ and the London-wide Low Emission Zone both apply, the latter charging lorries over 3.5 tonnes that do not meet the Euro VI standard. The M25 itself, a few miles further south past Hooley, is outside the zone, which sometimes confuses deliveries arriving from Surrey.
Not as trade waste. Croydon Council accepts no trade waste at any of its reuse and recycling centres, bans trailers at every site, and limits rubble to six bags per visit. Vans are admitted only at Factory Lane on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11am to 1pm, with tippers and Lutons barred. A licensed grab lorry is the practical route.
