Almost all of the variability on this route sits at the Sutton end, not the Croydon end. The council’s Local Implementation Plan names Sutton town centre, where the A232 passes through, as a major pinch point and a source of congestion in the borough. A mid-morning arrival is far more predictable than one booked into the school run, so if your crane time or your muck away sequence is tight, say so when you book and we will pick the slot around the town centre traffic.
Sutton is inside the ULEZ, and the Low Emission Zone covers the same area as a separate scheme applying to lorries, vans and specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. That side of it is our problem, not yours, and every vehicle is compliant before it leaves Croydon. The part that catches sites out is the density of camera enforcement around the town centre, which picks up lorries far more readily than cars.
The other thing to settle early is where the material actually goes. The borough’s household reuse and recycling centre at Kimpton Park Way, off Oldfields Road, is a household site only, and the council states that it is illegal to dispose of trade waste there. Vans and large vehicles are admitted only Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm and Saturday 9am to 12.30pm, with a booked time slot and no access on Sundays or bank holidays. SM1, SM2
Most of what travels this way is grab hire and muck away: excavated soil, stones, concrete, rubble and hardcore lifted off SM1 and SM2 sites from the kerb, with reach of up to 7.5 metres from the side of the vehicle depending on the vehicle and the site. The same lorry often goes back out loaded with MOT Type 1, ballast, sharp sand or screened topsoil, which saves an empty leg and a second visit.
