Because half the obvious places to put a lorry in BR5 and BR6 are places you legally cannot stop. Orpington High Street has its own regime. It is one of only two restricted parking zones in the borough: there are no yellow lines at all, waiting, parking and loading are permitted only in signed bays, and where no times are shown the restriction applies around the clock. A driver who assumes an unmarked kerb is a free kerb will get it wrong. For a High Street job, the practical route is to identify a signed bay or a private frontage within crane reach before the lorry is dispatched.
That leaves the working network. The A224 runs north to south as Court Road past the town centre and station towards Farnborough, and as Cray Avenue it forms the industrial spine of the Cray valley through St Mary Cray, continuing north as Sevenoaks Way. St Mary Cray is a designated Strategic Industrial Location and the largest industrial and employment area in the borough, with just under 40 hectares in light industrial or warehousing use and, in the council’s words, the best connections to the M25. The A208 Chislehurst Road heads north-west towards Petts Wood and Chislehurst, and the A20 Sidcup By-pass Road runs along the northern edge at St Paul’s Cray. Goods vehicles over 18 tonnes also need London Lorry Control Scheme permission on most borough roads between 9pm and 7am on weekdays and from 1pm Saturday until 7am Monday, and Orpington is inside the ULEZ, where TfL states the ULEZ, LEZ and Direct Vision Standard all operate in the same area.
The ground here is not London Clay. Bromley’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records the south of the borough as underlain by the White Chalk Subgroup, with the Clay-with-flints Formation capping the higher ground and River Terrace Deposits along the Cray valley, so excavation around Orpington and the Crays usually yields flinty clay and chalky spoil. It breaks up differently, it weighs differently, and it is worth telling us which you have before we estimate loads. There is plenty of it about: Bromley Council has spent 17 million pounds rebuilding the Walnuts Leisure Centre on Lych Gate Road, and planning permission was granted on 1 December 2021 for 40 homes with commercial space at 208-212 High Street, up to five storeys, and 17 apartments at 32-36 Homefield Rise with 35 per cent affordable housing. For household disposal, the borough’s operating site while Waldo Road is closed is Churchfields Road Reuse and Recycling Centre in Beckenham, BR3 4QY, which is residents only, requires booking, and admits neither commercial waste nor commercial or sign-written vehicles.
Out goes soil, stones, muck, concrete, rubble, hardcore, demolition waste and green waste. Around the Crays that often means chalky, flinty dig spoil from a footing or a drainage run; around the town centre it is more often broken slab, brick and mixed builders waste from a refurbishment.
In comes MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, ballast, sharp sand, building sand, topsoil and shingle. Ordering the delivery and the collection together on a BR6 job cuts the vehicle movements in half, which matters when the standing point is hard won.
The following are not accepted on standard bookings, so separate them before the lorry is booked rather than after it arrives.

Typically around 25 minutes by car from the operating centre at Pear Tree Farm, Featherbed Lane, Croydon. The natural approach is along the A232, which runs as a red route from the Croydon boundary at West Wickham High Street through to Locksbottom, where it becomes Crofton Road into Orpington.

The Bromley Local Plan identifies the Keston Mark junction, where the A232 Croydon Road meets the A233 Westerham Road and Oakley Road, as a point of significant delay for all road users.
