Most orders start with two questions: what the material is going under, and how close the lorry can actually get to it. As a crushed concrete supplier working out of Pear Tree Farm on Featherbed Lane in Croydon, we load to the grade you ask for, tip where your ground crew wants it, and keep the delivery inside whatever loading window the street allows.
Deliveries run on grab lorries fitted with regularly inspected Epsilon cranes. That gives reach of up to 7.5 metres from the side of the vehicle, depending on the vehicle and the site conditions, so material can go over a hoarding or a boundary wall rather than being barrowed from the kerb. Capacity is 20 cubic yards and up to 16 tonnes per job, subject to loading and road restrictions.
Pricing is project-based and quoted free, with no published price list, because a tip into an open plot off Burnt Ash Lane and a timed drop beside a red route are not the same job. Same-day collection or delivery is often possible but is always subject to availability, so the earlier a slot is booked the more likely it is to fit your pour date.
The A21 through Bromley is a Transport for London red route running, as the council describes it, from the M25 to the Lewisham boundary at Bromley Hill. Where the red lines run, stopping, loading and unloading are banned outright, which rules out tipping straight off Kentish Way or Masons Hill. Bromley’s Local Plan already lists the A21 at Masons Hill and Westmoreland Road as a junction needing improvement, so a lorry parked on that stretch is not a small inconvenience.
In the town centre the High Street is pedestrianised from Market Square to Elmfield Road under the council’s public realm scheme, so material has to come in off Kentish Way and the side streets. Bromley North Village is one of only two restricted parking zones in the borough: there are no yellow lines at all, and waiting or loading is permitted only in signed bays. There is also a controlled parking zone across the town centre with separate inner and outer areas, and the hours of restriction are shown on signs at each zone entry point. Away from the centre, the A222 Tweedy Road and Beckenham Lane and the A2212 Burnt Ash Lane are usually the more workable approaches, Burnt Ash Lane in particular for anything heading north towards Lee Green.
Timing matters as much as the route. Goods vehicles over 18 tonnes need London Lorry Control Scheme permission to use most borough roads between 9pm and 7am on weekdays, and from 1pm on Saturday until 7am on Monday. Bromley is also inside the ULEZ, and Transport for London states that the ULEZ, the LEZ and the Direct Vision Standard all operate in the same area, so a grab lorry working here has to meet the London-wide Low Emission Zone standard as well.
Ground conditions explain why so much sub-base is imported into the borough rather than won on site. Bromley’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records the north of the borough as underlain predominantly by the Thames Group of clay, silt, sand and gravel, with ribbons of Lambeth Group and Thanet Formation and River Terrace Deposits along the Ravensbourne valley, so excavation around the town centre produces heavy cohesive clay rather than free-draining granular material. The conservation area appraisal adds that the High Street sits on an elevated plateau sloping away to the south, dropping steeply into the Shortlands valley to the west and the Ravensbourne valley below, which is why so many town centre sites need retaining works and stepped excavation. That combination, clay spoil out and graded fill in, is the normal shape of a Bromley groundworks job.
MOT Type 1 is a specification for a graded granular sub-base, not the name of a particular rock. Primary aggregate quarried as limestone or granite is commonly supplied to it, and recycled crushed concrete can be produced to it as well, provided the material is crushed and screened to the right grading. The two are not automatically interchangeable on paper, because it is the specification on your drawing that decides what is acceptable.
Recycled crushed concrete comes from demolition arisings and groundworks material that has been broken down and graded rather than quarried. Used as hardcore under a slab, as oversite fill, as a piling mat or as a temporary haul road, it does the job that granular fill is there to do. Where an engineer or an adopting authority has specified primary aggregate, that is what should go down.
We supply crushed concrete and MOT Type 1 to the grade ordered and provide the paperwork for the load on request. If you are unsure which of the two your specification will accept, ask the person who wrote the specification before the material is tipped, because it is considerably cheaper to change an order than to dig out a compacted layer.

MOT Type 1 is a specification rather than a single rock type, so recycled crushed concrete can be produced to it. We supply to the grade ordered and provide the paperwork for the load on request.
The same vehicle that brings sub-base in can take spoil out, which matters on tight Bromley plots where there is nowhere to store two piles at once. Our operating centre is at Pear Tree Farm, Featherbed Lane, Croydon CR0 9AA, and the run into Bromley is roughly 5.3 miles, about 16 minutes for a car by way of the A232 Addiscombe Road and the A222 towards Bromley Hill. A loaded eight-wheeler is slower than that, and it is fair to add roughly 15 to 20 per cent to any car journey time.
Those figures are typical rather than a promise. The A21 and the town centre junctions do not behave the same at 7am as they do at 4pm, and a delivery that has to sit and wait for a signed loading bay in Bromley North Village will take longer than one tipping into an open compound.
