The second thing to plan is timing on site. Goods vehicles over five tonnes gross weight may not park on the public highway anywhere in the borough between 6.30pm and 8am, so the familiar tactic of getting the lorry in place the night before does not work here. The Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records Kempton Park Gravel of sand and gravel over the bedrock along the Ravensbourne, Quaggy and Pool corridors that converge in the town centre, so a single plot can produce London Clay, granular river gravel and made ground within a few metres, and the mix affects both weight and where the material can go.

Most SE13 work is either muck away from a dig or hardcore and rubble off a strip-out, with MOT Type 1, crushed concrete and ballast running in the other direction for bases and access tracks. With Lewisham Gateway phase two and the shopping centre programme drawing contractors into the town centre, a lot of the smaller enabling work sits on plots with no room to store spoil, so material tends to leave the same day it is dug.
