It involves a route conversation first. The rock explains the hole. Godstone stands on the Folkestone Formation of the Lower Greensand, which the British Geological Survey records as carrying high-quality silica sand between Buckland and Godstone, and which is still worked at North Park Quarry, one of only four active soft sand sites in Surrey listed in the county’s Local Aggregate Assessment. It is the same soft, weakly cemented sand that was mined underground in the 19th century. For a contractor that means excavations here can produce free-running sand that will not hold a batter, and that unrecorded voids are a real possibility rather than a curiosity.
On the surface, the strategic routes are the A22 running south from the M25 towards Felbridge and East Grinstead, and the A25 running east to west through the Vale of Holmesdale. M25 junction 6, the Godstone Interchange, is named after the village, and an upgrade to it has been identified as infrastructure needed to support the proposed South Godstone garden community. Local roads see traffic they were never meant to carry: the Tandridge District Freight Review records lorries using Eastbourne Road in preference to the A22 and A25, and using Hart’s Lane to reach the Lambs industrial estate even though it is signed as unsuitable for HGVs.
We do not route around a closure by using a lane that is signed against us. It admits no vans, pickups or trailers at all and takes no business waste, and it opens Thursday to Saturday for household recycling only. The nearest centre accepting all waste types is Earlswood at Redhill. For anyone running a Godstone job commercially, that rules out the local tip before you start.
