Most RH8 work is either taking spoil off a site or bringing stone onto one. Our grab hire services cover both from the same vehicle, so a footings dig can be emptied and the sub-base delivered on a single visit rather than two. That matters more in Tandridge than it does in town, because every extra lorry movement is another pass along a lane that was not built for it.
The crane works from the road. The operator sets down, extends the arm up to 7.5 metres from the side of the vehicle depending on conditions, and lifts material directly from a driveway, a verge-side heap or an open excavation. There is no container standing on the highway afterwards and no skip permit to obtain.
Capacity is 20 cubic yards and up to 16 tonnes per job, subject to loading and road restrictions. Same-day collection is often possible but always subject to availability, and on the longer Oxted run it helps considerably if we know the day before.
Oxted sits at the foot of the North Downs chalk escarpment, and the ground changes fast. White Chalk is still quarried at Oxted Quarry on Chalkpit Lane, RH8 0QW. To the south the Lower Greensand takes over, including the fuller’s earth-bearing Sandgate Formation of the belt the British Geological Survey records running between Reigate and Oxted, and the Folkestone Formation sand worked at Moorhouse Sandpits in Limpsfield immediately east of the town. Excavated spoil can shift from free-draining chalk or sand to sticky, plastic clay within a few hundred metres, which changes both the weight of a load and how it behaves in the grab.
Moorhouse Sandpits is one of only four active soft sand sites in Surrey identified in the county’s Local Aggregate Assessment, the Folkestone Formation belt running across central Surrey from Limpsfield in the east to Farnham in the west. That is why aggregate lorries are a familiar sight on these roads and why local patience with badly planned HGV movements is limited.
Oxted Quarry’s own traffic is capped by planning condition. Following Surrey County Council’s 2018 periodic review of the site, permitted under application TA12/902 on 17 October 2018, the quarry is limited to an average of 76 HGV movements a day, with daily maxima of 112 Monday to Friday and 72 on Saturdays. Chalkpit Lane therefore already carries a metered stream of heavy vehicles, and adding an unannounced eight-wheeler to it at the wrong hour helps nobody.
The town-centre and lane constraints complete the picture. Station Road East is the main town-centre street and holds Tandridge District Council’s offices, which also house Surrey County Council’s Oxted local office, at RH8 0BT, with the nearest public car park on Ellice Road off Amy Road. Spring Lane carries a width restriction which the Tandridge District Freight Review records HGVs are ignoring, and we do not plan routes that rely on doing the same. The M25 at junction 6, the Godstone interchange, is the nearest motorway access, and the A22 runs south from there through Felbridge towards East Grinstead. All of this sits in a district that is 94 per cent Green Belt, the highest proportion in the country, while the emerging Local Plan 2024 to 2044 must plan for around 12,300 homes over fifteen years, about 983 a year against the current plan’s 125.

There is one local rule worth acting on before your first load. Warlingham Community Recycling Centre on Bond Road, Warlingham CR6 9SD is the only Surrey community recycling centre in the Tandridge district. It is a recycling-only household site open Thursday to Saturday, it takes no business waste, and it will not admit vans, pickups or trailers at all. The nearest centre accepting all waste types is Earlswood at Redhill. If your plan for a small Oxted clearance was a van and a trip to Warlingham, that plan does not work.
In Oxted the honest comparison is about lane width and how long a container can occupy a narrow road with a width restriction on it.

Godstone High Street, on the main route west from Oxted through the Vale of Holmesdale, has been closed with diversions in place since the road collapse of 17 February 2025 while a 19th-century mine network beneath it is grouted. And Oxted sits in Surrey outside the Greater London boundary, so the Ultra Low Emission Zone does not reach it, since Transport for London states the zone operates only across the London boroughs and the City of London, with the M25 itself not in the zone.

Where material sits further into a plot, moving it forward into one pile before we arrive keeps the loading quick, which matters on a lane where the lorry is partly blocking the way.
