Two local conditions shape almost every dig here: chalk, and water moving through it. Our muck away services are booked as phased loads so the excavator keeps working, but on a Caterham site the phasing has to survive a change in the weather as well as a change in the ground.
Loading is done by the vehicle. A regularly inspected Epsilon crane reaches up to 7.5 metres from the side of the lorry, depending on the vehicle and site conditions, which suits the narrow valley-bottom frontages and the steep hillside plots either side of the town. A single job runs to 20 cubic yards and no more than 16 tonnes, subject to loading and road restrictions.
Dry chalk loads well and travels cleanly. Chalk that has been standing in a wet trench is a different material altogether: it puts on weight, it smears, and it holds together in the body in a way that slows tipping. Where the programme allows, letting spoil drain before it is loaded gets more material into fewer loads.
Caterham sits in a dry valley cut through the chalk of the North Downs escarpment, and that geology governs the spoil. Croydon Council’s Caterham Bourne flood investigation classes the catchment bedrock as Chalk, a principal aquifer of high permeability, while the Caterham, Chaldon and Whyteleafe Neighbourhood Plan records impermeable clay surface geology over steep-sided valleys that contribute to periodic flooding. What comes out of a footing here is therefore usually chalk and flint below a clay-rich surface layer, which is two materials with two very different weights and two different handling problems in one trench.
The second factor is groundwater, and it is not theoretical. The Caterham Bourne causes severe groundwater flooding in the valley. Croydon Council’s Section 19 investigation records the A22 being closed during the 2013 to 2014 event because of the number of pumping hoses laid across it, and closed for around a month in 2000 to 2001 through bourne flooding and foul sewer surcharging. The Environment Agency maintains a standing flood alert area for groundwater flooding across the Caterham Bourne catchment, covering Caterham, Whyteleafe, Kenley, Purley, South Croydon, Beddington and Carshalton. After a long wet spell, water can rise into an excavation that was dry a fortnight earlier, and saturated chalk is markedly heavier to shift than the same volume dug in summer.
The road pattern follows the valleys. The A22 Godstone Road is the north-south arterial through Caterham Valley and the link to Croydon and London, running along the Bourne itself. The B2030 Croydon Road is described in the neighbourhood plan as one of the busiest roads in the area and, with the Church Walk Centre, carries the greatest concentration of shops and services. Harestone Valley Road runs up one of the dry chalk valleys and serves Caterham School, Coulsdon Road links north to Caterham on the Hill, Stanstead Road is another of the main routes, and Whyteleafe Hill climbs steeply out of the Bourne valley towards Whyteleafe and Kenley. The neighbourhood plan records congestion in the area as fairly high, made worse by infrequent off-peak bus services.
One practical warning about parking. Tandridge District Council’s only managed car park in Caterham is Town End at Caterham-on-the-Hill, CR3 5UX, and it has height barriers admitting no vehicle over two metres including any load, with trailers, caravans and motor homes banned outright. It is not an option for a working vehicle, a van and trailer or an overspill wagon, so plan the standing point at the site itself. Town End is also one of the sites named in the Caterham Masterplan, adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document in 2018 alongside the Waitrose area, Quadrant House, Raglan Precinct, the High Street, Church Walk shopping centre, Station Avenue and Croydon Road, so the town-centre picture is still changing.
The accepted list runs soil, stones, muck, concrete, rubble, hardcore, demolition waste and green waste. On a Caterham job that usually means topsoil and clay-rich surface material first, then chalk and flint from the footings or the basement, then broken slab and old brick if something has come down.
Standard bookings do not cover asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, railway sleepers, mattresses, tyres, fridges, freezers, paint, chemicals or liquids. Those need separating during the strip-out and flagging before the lorry is loaded.
Where contamination is suspected, the spoil has to be tested and classified before it is removed so that it goes to a permitted facility. Made ground of unknown origin counts, as does anything stained or unusually smelling. Raise it at quotation stage and those loads can be planned separately from the clean chalk.
Chalk behaves differently wet and dry, and that feeds into which vehicle suits the job.

Caterham is the short run. Our operating centre at Pear Tree Farm, Featherbed Lane, Croydon CR0 9AA is about 6.5 miles away, roughly 20 minutes for a car via the A22 Godstone Road, with M25 junction 6 close by for anything coming from further out. Add roughly 15 to 20 per cent for a loaded eight-wheeler, and treat these as typical rather than guaranteed times.
That proximity is genuinely useful on a phased dig, because the turnaround between loads is short enough that a machine rarely stands waiting. Same-day collection is often possible but always subject to availability.
Caterham lies outside Greater London, so the TfL Ultra Low Emission Zone and the Low Emission Zone do not apply on site. Both operate across all London boroughs and the City of London, and the LEZ covers lorries, vans and specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, so material run north into London still has to meet the standard.
It means you stay responsible for your spoil even after it drives away. Handing excavated material to an unregistered carrier leaves the producer exposed if it is later fly-tipped. Every load carries a waste transfer note recording what the material was and where it went, and every load is tipped at an authorised disposal or transfer site. Everyone on the vehicle is CPCS compliant, CSCS registered, screened before hire and fully insured.
The county household route is closed to trade work and, in Caterham’s case, closed to most working vehicles as well. The nearest Surrey community recycling centre is Warlingham on Bond Road, CR6 9SD, run by SUEZ Surrey for Surrey County Council. It accepts no business waste, does not admit vans or pickups at all, and opens only Thursday and Friday from 8am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 4pm. For a dig, a booked grab or tipper with the correct paperwork is the only sensible route.

Less than most places, because Caterham is roughly 6.5 miles and about 20 minutes from the Croydon operating centre by car. Same-day collection is often possible but always subject to availability. For a dig running over several days, booking slots in advance still works better, particularly if the excavator is on hire and standing time is being paid for.
Only once it has been tested and classified. Suspected contaminated material has to be characterised before removal so it can be sent to a facility permitted to accept it, and that applies to made ground of unknown origin as well as visibly affected soil. Keep it separate from the clean chalk and clay, tell us at quotation stage, and those loads are priced and routed on their own.
