Redhill is the point where the journey stops being a London journey. It is about 9.9 miles from Pear Tree Farm, Featherbed Lane, roughly 31 minutes in a car, and there are two sensible ways to do it: straight down the A23 Brighton Road, or out to the M23 and in at junction 7 onto the A25. The motorway option keeps a loaded lorry at a steadier speed when the A23 is queueing, so the choice is usually made on the morning rather than in advance.
Half an hour each way is the number that shapes the day. A round trip plus loading takes most of a morning, so two loads is a comfortable day’s work into RH1 and three is a push. Add roughly 15 to 20 per cent to the car time for a loaded eight-wheeler, and treat all of these as typical times rather than guarantees. Surrey County Council describes the A23 Three Arch Road junction with Maple Road as suffering major congestion and severe queues, and as the main approach to East Surrey Hospital, so an afternoon slot can lose more time there than on the whole run down from Croydon.
The constraint most likely to catch out a delivery in Redhill is an experimental weight restriction rather than a camera. Pendleton Road and 18 connected residential roads, including King’s Avenue, Fairlawn Drive, Cotland Acres, Sandpit Road and Church Road, are covered by a 7.5 tonne environmental weight restriction made by Surrey County Council on 27 January 2023, with access permitted only for vehicles serving property inside the zone. If your site is in that zone, a grab lorry can still come to you, because it is serving a property there, but the route in has to be worked out in advance and the surrounding roads cannot be used as a through route.
The other Redhill-specific point is what comes out of the hole. Redhill sits on the central Wealden greensand belt between the North Downs chalk and the Weald Clay, and the borough council’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records a variety of subsoils around Reigate, Redhill and Merstham including Upper Greensand, Gault, Folkestone Beds, Sandgate Beds, Hythe Beds and Atherfield Clay, with permeability varying considerably and springs where permeable layers sit over less permeable ones. RH1 gives us a mix of domestic muck away and commercial work off the industrial side of town, where Holmethorpe Industrial Estate is the largest estate in the borough with 110,581 square metres of floorspace across 164 units. No. Earlswood Community Recycling Centre does not accept business waste, and Surrey County Council directs businesses to a waste transfer station instead. Vans, pickups and trailers also need a CRC permit that is valid at only nine Surrey sites.
