On arrival the driver sets the vehicle, sets the crane and loads from where the lorry stands. A regularly inspected Epsilon crane reaches up to 7.5 metres from the side of the vehicle, depending on the vehicle and site conditions, which usually means the plot stays clear for the excavator. Each job takes 20 cubic yards and up to 16 tonnes, subject to loading and road restrictions.
Redhill jobs need one extra question answered before the first load: what the ground is doing. A dig that starts in dry Folkestone sand and finishes in wet Gault clay produces two very different materials at two very different weights, and it is easier to plan the sequence than to find out at the weighbridge.
Redhill sits on the central Wealden greensand belt, between the chalk of the North Downs and the Weald Clay, and that is the single most useful thing to know before pricing a dig here. Reigate and Banstead Borough Council’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records a variety of subsoils around Reigate, Redhill and Merstham, including Upper Greensand, Gault, Folkestone Beds, Sandgate Beds, Hythe Beds and Atherfield Clay, and notes that the permeability of these soils varies considerably, with springs breaking out where permeable layers overlie less permeable ones. In practice a single Redhill site can give up free-draining sand at one end and heavy clay at the other, and a trench can start dry and be running water by the afternoon.
That variability shows up in the load count rather than in the volume. Sand travels light and clean. Wet Gault clay is heavy, sticks in the body and needs the load sheeted and the body tipped out properly. If the dig is deep enough to cross a permeability boundary, allow for the tonnage to change part way through and keep the arisings separate where you can, because a clean sand load and a wet clay load do not have the same disposal route.
On the road side, the constraint that catches hauliers out is on Pendleton Road. Surrey County Council made an experimental 7.5 tonne environmental weight restriction on 27 January 2023 covering Pendleton Road and 18 connected residential roads, including King’s Avenue, Fairlawn Drive, Cotland Acres, Sandpit Road and Church Road, with access permitted only for vehicles serving property inside the zone. A grab lorry going to a job on one of those roads is doing exactly that, but a driver cutting through is not, so route your deliveries accordingly and tell the driver which address inside the zone he is serving.
Elsewhere, the A23 Three Arch Road junction with Maple Road suffers major congestion, severe queues and rat-running, and it is the main approach to East Surrey Hospital as well as the link south to Horley, Gatwick and Crawley. The county council’s improvement scheme there brings new parking restrictions along the A23 and needs Secretary of State consent to deregister small areas of common land beside the highway, with replacement land to be registered at Kiln Brow north of Redhill Football Club. For commercial work, most of the volume is on Holmethorpe Industrial Estate, the borough’s largest with 110,581 square metres of floorspace across 164 units, including Foxboro Park and the newly completed units at Slaithwaite Business Park, served by Ormside Way where a road table is approved at the Frenches Road junction.
Soil, stones, muck, concrete, rubble, hardcore, demolition waste and green waste all go. On an RH1 job that typically means topsoil strip, then whatever the local subsoils throw up, then broken slab, old footings and brick from anything being taken down. Segregating clean arisings from mixed demolition keeps the disposal route simple, though mixed loads are perfectly normal.
Not accepted on a standard booking: asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, railway sleepers, mattresses, tyres, fridges, freezers, paint, chemicals and liquids. Set them aside during the strip-out and tell us before the lorry is loaded.
If there is any reason to suspect contamination, from a previous industrial use, unexplained made ground, staining or a strong smell, the material has to be tested and classified before it leaves site so it can be sent somewhere permitted to accept it. That is a sampling and reporting exercise, not a judgement call by a driver, and it is worth starting early because it sits on the critical path of the dig.
Both remove excavated material, and the right one depends on the plot and on the mix of sand and clay coming out.

Both are limited to 20 cubic yards and up to 16 tonnes per job, subject to loading and road restrictions.
The operating centre is at Pear Tree Farm, Featherbed Lane, Croydon CR0 9AA, roughly 9.9 miles from Redhill. A car takes about 31 minutes on the A23 Brighton Road and the M23 junction 7 and A25 approach. A loaded eight-wheeler runs slower, so add roughly 15 to 20 per cent, and expect more than that if the route lands on the A23 Three Arch Road junction with Maple Road at peak.
Redhill lies outside Greater London, so the TfL Ultra Low Emission Zone and Low Emission Zone do not apply on site. Both schemes operate across all London boroughs and the City of London, and the LEZ applies to lorries, vans and specialist heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, so loads run north into London still have to meet those standards. Same-day muck away in Redhill is often possible but always subject to availability.
Duty of care follows the material, and it stays with the producer as well as the carrier. Prime Waste Services Ltd holds upper tier waste carrier registration CBDU480663 and operator licence OK2066087, with four vehicles authorised at the Croydon operating centre, trading under company number 14793814 since April 2023.
Every load leaves with a waste transfer note recording the material and where it went, and every load is tipped at an authorised disposal or transfer site. Drivers and operatives are CPCS compliant and CSCS registered, and the business is fully insured. Keep the transfer notes with the site file; they are the evidence that the spoil left properly.

Vans, pickups and trailers need a county permit, and those permits are valid at only nine of Surrey’s recycling centres.

It changes the weight, not the hole. The subsoils around Redhill range from Folkestone and Hythe Beds sand to Gault and Atherfield Clay, and permeability varies considerably, so wet clay arisings are far heavier per cubic metre than dry sand. Stop, keep it separate and get it tested. Suspected contaminated material has to be tested and classified before removal so it can go to a facility permitted to receive it, and that applies to made ground of unknown origin as much as to obvious staining. We will quote those loads separately once the classification is known, and clean arisings can carry on leaving site in the meantime.
