A single extension dig or a broken-up patio will exhaust that route long before the muck is gone.

Redhill’s spine is the A23, which runs north from the town centre and south as Three Arch Road towards Horley, Gatwick and Crawley, and which forms the main approach to East Surrey Hospital. Its signalised crossroads with Maple Road is the town’s known pressure point: Surrey County Council describes major congestion and severe queues there, with rat-running through nearby streets, and the joint county and borough improvement scheme brings new parking restrictions along that stretch of the A23. The scheme also needs Secretary of State consent to deregister small areas of common land beside the highway, with replacement land to be registered at Kiln Brow north of Redhill Football Club. East to west, the A25 Hatchlands Road carries traffic across the town, with an approved county scheme for a puffin crossing south of the Brownlow Road junction near Hatchlands Primary School.
The constraint most likely to catch out a haulier is the experimental 7.5 tonne environmental weight restriction that Surrey County Council made on 27 January 2023 covering Pendleton Road and 18 connected residential roads, among them King’s Avenue, Fairlawn Drive, Cotland Acres, Sandpit Road and Church Road. Inside that zone, access is permitted only for vehicles serving property within it. If your site is in that block, say so when you book, because it changes the approach rather than ruling the job out.
Elsewhere, the north side of town has the A242 Gatton Park Road, listed by the county for investigation of speed reduction measures, while Princess Way runs between Ladbroke Road and the Station roundabout with an approved scheme for a shared footway and cycleway. In the industrial area, Ormside Way has an approved minor scheme for a road-table traffic calming feature at its junction with Frenches Road, and Batts Hill has an approved contraflow cycle facility, with pedestrian crossing improvements at Whitepost Hill and at the Blackstone Hill and The Chase junction. Holmethorpe Industrial Estate remains the largest industrial estate in the borough, with 110,581 square metres of floorspace across 164 units, including Foxboro Park and the newly completed mixed-use units at Slaithwaite Business Park, so heavy vehicle movements around Ormside Way and Holmethorpe are routine rather than exceptional.
Ground conditions are the other Redhill-specific factor. The town sits on the central Wealden greensand belt between the North Downs chalk and the Weald Clay, and the borough’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment records Upper Greensand, Gault, Folkestone Beds, Sandgate Beds, Hythe Beds and Atherfield Clay around Reigate, Redhill and Merstham. Permeability varies considerably, with springs where permeable layers sit over less permeable ones, so excavated spoil can shift from free-draining sand to heavy wet clay inside a single plot. That affects tonnage per cubic yard, and therefore how many loads a dig really needs. Town centre work is steady too: The Rise on Marketfield Way completed in 2023, following Wheatley Court on Cromwell Road in 2022 and 133 apartments on the former Liquid and Envy site, while a resubmitted scheme for up to 255 dwellings at Redhill railway station was refused by the borough’s Planning Committee in October 2024.
The lorry stands on the road or on a firm hardstanding and the Epsilon crane does the reaching, up to 7.5 metres from the side of the vehicle depending on the vehicle and site conditions. Nothing needs to be barrowed to the kerb and no plant has to track across a finished surface.
