Everything is loaded from the road by crane. The operator sets the legs, swings the grab over the boundary and lifts spoil straight into the body, so nobody is barrowing muck down a drive for a morning. One load is 20 cubic yards and up to 16 tonnes, subject to loading and road restrictions, and the crane reaches up to 7.5 metres from the side of the vehicle depending on the vehicle and site conditions. That covers a front garden and most of a driveway without the lorry leaving the highway.
Because the vehicle is only stationary while it loads, the street is occupied for minutes rather than days. On the residents’ permit streets around the town centre, that is the difference between a job that has to be arranged with the council and one that does not.
The A24 does most of the work here. It runs in from the Ewell Bypass as Epsom Road and East Street, passes through the centre as the High Street, then leaves southwards as South Street and Dorking Road towards Ashtead and Dorking. Kiln Lane comes directly off the A24 north-east of the centre and is the access road for the Kiln Lane Industrial Estate, while the A2022 leaves the town at the High Street junction and climbs east past Epsom Downs towards Nork and Banstead Crossroads.

The two estates are separated by the railway line and have no direct vehicular connection to one another, so a lorry finishing on Longmead Road has to travel back out to Hook Road or the A24 to reach Kiln Lane. Two drops on what looks like one trading estate are not two minutes apart.
In the centre, Epsom Market Place holds street markets on Thursdays and Saturdays plus a farmers’ market on the first Sunday of each month, occupying the Market Place at the middle of the High Street on those days. Epsom and Ewell Borough Council operates Residents’ Parking Zones in the surrounding streets, where on-street parking needs a resident or visitor permit, and public parking is concentrated in barrier-controlled multi-storey and surface car parks such as the Ashley Centre and Hook Road rather than on the High Street. None of those are places to load a lorry, so the working position has to be the site frontage itself.

Spoil dug in the centre is therefore typically granular terrace material, while ground towards Epsom Downs is chalk. Both load heavy once wet, so the 16-tonne limit tends to arrive before the body looks full.
Out goes soil, stones, muck, concrete, rubble, hardcore, demolition waste and green waste. Around Epsom that most often means terrace gravel and sand off a town centre dig, chalky arisings from the higher ground towards the Downs, or slab and hardcore from a driveway lift.
